Back to Milan, and a Flight North to Helsinki

Chiasso to Milan took under an hour, closing the loop on three weeks that had started at Milano Rogoredo and were now ending, more or less, at Milano Centrale. It was strange to be back in a city I had already used up an entire chapter of this trip in, the zipper incident and the sprint for the platform still fresh enough that walking through the station again felt like visiting an old argument. The rail pass's job was done, twenty one days of it folded into a plastic sleeve that would spend the rest of the trip doing nothing. What came next needed a plane instead of a platform, Milan Malpensa instead of a Eurail app telling me which track to find.

The flight to Helsinki left just after eleven, a Finnair wing catching gold light above a solid floor of cloud somewhere over the crossing from Central Europe to the Nordic edge of it, the kind of view that makes a window seat worth fighting for even four hours into a trip that has already given you plenty of views. It landed mid afternoon into a fog thick enough that the terminal's own sign, FINAVIA HELSINKI AIRPORT, only fully resolved once the plane had nearly reached the gate, letters swimming up out of gray the way they do in the kind of dream where you already know where you are before you can actually read anything.

Nine countries of overnight trains and free walking tours gave way, in a few hours in the air, to something colder and much further north.

A stretch of the trip built around a single splurge I had been saving the budget for since before I left home was about to start, the loose, improvised routing of the last three weeks about to give way to something with an actual booking attached to it, dates fixed, a night in Rovaniemi already paid for in a way nothing else on this trip had been. It felt less like the middle of a journey and more like the start of a second, smaller one, nested inside the first.
