There was a McCafe coffee at quarter to one in the morning, bought in the stretch between the midnight train arrival and finally making it to a bed, the kind of purchase that only makes sense to the person making it at that exact hour. I do not remember if it was good. I remember that it was warm.
The train out of Hamburg left early enough that the city and I only really overlapped for a few dark hours, and the changeover at Osnabruck turned out to be stranger than a changeover has any right to be: the station front lit up in full carnival colors, red and blue floodlights washing over the old brick facade, a sign reading HERZLICH WILLKOMMEN stretched wide enough to greet a city rather than one groggy passenger with a backpack, small wooden market stalls shuttered on either side waiting for the day to properly start. I have no memory of Osnabruck beyond that one welcome sign, and some part of me suspects that is exactly the right amount of Osnabruck to have.
Amsterdam arrived a little after noon, and the first real look at it came from across the water rather than at street level: the A'DAM tower standing tall and dark over Amsterdam Noord, a rooftop swing visible even from a distance, a boat crossing the frame just as I took the photo and blurring itself into a long gray smear in the water. The whole building looked like it belonged to a different, more vertical city than the one waiting behind it, glass and steel doing the opposite of everything gabled and brick I had been walking through for two weeks.
Some cities you meet at street level. This one I met by water first.
By evening I was walking without much plan, the kind of walk this trip had taught me to trust by now, streets slick from a rain I had mostly missed while I was still finding my bearings. Die Port van Cleve lit up gold on a corner near Dam Square, neon script and strung lights turning a hotel facade into something closer to a stage set than a place people actually slept, a restaurant glowing warm behind arched windows strung with more lights than seemed strictly necessary. The Internationaal Theater Amsterdam did the same trick near Leidseplein, its whole reflection doubled and folded upside down into a puddle on the pavement in front of it, a single figure crossing the square breaking the symmetry just as I looked up. I ended the walk under a stone archway near the Rijksmuseum, the passage framing a Christmas tree lit up gold at the far end of Museumplein like the city had built the whole arch just to hold that one view in place, bike lane markings underfoot the only reminder that this was, first and always, a passage for someone else's commute.
